Like many other financial products over the years, exchange-traded funds (ETFs) – mutual fund-like baskets of securities that track an index and trade like a stock – have gotten a little ahead of themselves.

In August, 41 ETFs were shut down and 11 more are expected to be liquidated this month, according to InvestmentNews. So why the closures and what happens if your portfolio includes one of the shuttered funds?
