Investors looking for any relief from last Friday’s market rout were sadly disappointed this week. Again data-driven volatility and the continued uncertainty over what the Federal Reserve will do managed to cause another stomach-churning roller coaster ride for investors.
Part of this week’s problem was the sheer amount of data being released. Mid-month meant that traders were treated to a plethora of metrics. However, measures of consumer health, manufacturing and inflation all came in rather mixed, which helped to heighten the uncertainty surrounding the week’s trading activity.
Also not helping were the rather poor earnings released in the week. While there weren’t many firms reporting since earnings season is over, those that did painted a mixed picture.
In the end, the markets fought for direction, which resulted in some big swings in the major indexes.
